Tasteful Tuesday 9.24.13 (Day 2 of Grain Free)

I woke up at 4:30 am to get in my workout. Dinner plans for work had been made a few days prior, so I knew my evening would not be spent in the gym. Before my leg/cardio sesh in my garage, I drank a Spark. After my routine I had 8 ounces of Unsweetened Coconut Almond Milk with 1 scoop of Birthday Cake About Time protein powder.

For breakfast I kept things simple. For the protein half of this meal I scrambled 1/2 cup of egg whites and 1 whole egg with chopped veggies (tomato, onions and bell peppers). I topped my scrambled eggs with 1 tablespoon of fat free shredded cheese and a small squirt of yellow mustard and reduced sugar ketchup. Instead of oatmeal (since I’m temporarily grain free) I had one banana and two small mandarin oranges.

At  9:30 am I sat down for my morning snack before I had to hit the road for work. A slight change in “the usual” was made. I had a medium fuji apple chopped and nuked, then sprinkled with ground cinnamon. Typically I’ll have 1 tablespoon of all natural nut butter with my apple, but I decided to move this to my evening snack. I still had two hard boiled eggs. I sliced them, kept one yolk, mashed it and mixed with with yellow mustard, a tiny bit of reduced sugar ketchup and black pepper. Then I filled the egg halves with the yolk filling and enjoyed deviled eggs.


Sometimes I travel for work, sometimes I don’t. When I make a significant change in my diet (for example, the current grain-free/refined sugar-free plan) it is harder to stay strict if I’m travelling. This week my boss set me up for five meals out with clients/business partners. FIVE. FIVE MEALS OUT. I don’t like to eat out that much. I was able to opt out of one, so as of today (Wednesday) I have successfully survived through two of the now four mandatory dining out meals. Friday, there is no plan to eat out, but we will be celebrating an office staff member’s birthday, so that will be taunting me. Tuesday’s lunch was number one of the four work meals planned on the road. I did great. I planned ahead! I packed a lunchbox and secretly slipped it into the restaurant. 🙂 In my lunchbox you would find a bag of chopped mixed greens including spinach, chard, kale and cucumber, another bag with chopped avocado (about 1/4 fruit), a small bag of carrots and a little of my homemade ranch dressing. At the restaurant I ordered a grilled chicken salad with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and pickled okra only. When the salad came out, I picked off the pickle and okra then added the REAL salad ingredients! I left the carrots off and saved those for a snack later (just in case).


I didn’t need the carrots for my afternoon snack. I already had plans to enjoy the nut butter (remember I didn’t put it on my apple). I literally licked the one serving (2 tablespoons) of Justin’s Honey Almond Butter off of a spoon. Before the nut butter, I had one string cheese (the Weight Watchers kind). Pretty great snack.

Dinner was scheduled for 6 pm at a local diner. It was HARD to stay on track. Even though I don’t LOVE bread, the fresh rolls looked AMAZING! I stayed strong and avoided the rolls. I ordered a dish called “Cajun Duo” and it was DELICIOUS. It was basically blackened tilapia, grilled shrimp with a crawfish cream sauce served on a bed of rice. I asked to leave the rice off and to put the crawfish sauce on the side for me to dip lightly. The dish came with two sides, which I chose green beans and a house salad (no cheese, no dressing). THEN my boss ordered peach cobbler and ice cream for everyone. SO.DARN.HARD.TO.PASS.ON. Butttt I did.

Overall, I am VERY pleased with my choices, especially considering my temptations.
